Study Permit & Family Ties

Many applicants make the mistake over overstating family ties in a study permit application for Canada. Immigration Canada requires that you provide a full account of your close relatives (spouse, parents, children and siblings). However, many applicants make the mistake of overstating the presence of family in Canada in their Personal Statement. Always remember that your study permit is not a family-reunification-tool. You are coming to Canada as a student – NOT to reunite with family. Bragging about your family or stating that you will be relying on family members for support1 is a fast-track to refusal.

  1. Exceptions generally apply to minors or young students (usually under the age of 25), as it is customary for these students to rely on parents or close family members for support. ↩︎
